Merits and Flaws


The following is a master list of all of the M20 merits and flaws from the core book and the Book of Secrets. In addition, a handful of approved merits and flaws from Revised Edition have been added. No other Merits or Flaws from previous game editions are allowed.

Note that the Admin always reserves the right to make judgment calls on Merits and Flaws that may vary from what's listed here.

Judgment Calls


Miscellaneous Rulings

1: In this system, if a Merit or Flaw uses the words "per story" it should be interpreted as "per month."

2: Additionally, if a Merit or Flaw involves an NPC that is meant to be under the control of the Storyteller, this NPC will instead be under the control of whoever is most appropriate for the circumstance in question. Most allied NPCs will be under the player's control, unless the player wishes otherwise. Enemy NPCs will typically require another player to step up and take responsibility for them. That player might very well be the Storyteller, if they volunteer, but will more likely be someone else. (Storytellers tend to have a lot on their plate.) In all cases, whoever controls the NPC must agree to the responsibility (otherwise the Merit or Flaw will not be approved.)

3: If a character has multiple mundane aptitude-type Merits (Computer Aptitude, Artistically Gifted, etc.) the difficulty modifiers cannot stack. So, for example, if a mage is working on something like video game design and they happen to have both Computer Aptitude and Artistically Gifted, only one of the modifiers could apply to a single dice roll for that task. It would still be possible, if the player broke the task up into multiple types of rolls, to use both. Just not on the same roll.

Berserker / Stress Atavism

This trait is only available as a Merit, regardless of the character's circumstances. The social and emotional repercussions are the reason it only costs 4 points.

Circumspect Avatar

This Merit is only available to mages with an Avatar rating of 3 or less. Note that these characters DO still have to undergo Seekings in order to advance their Arete. They just play out like mundane events and epiphanies. (And "mundane" in this case doesn't necessarily mean "easy.")

Computer Aptitude

Unlike other merits of this type, the description for Computer Aptitude contains text that seems to imply it can be used to decrease the difficulty of some Arete rolls. On this site, that is not allowed for this or any other aptitude. It will only reduce difficulties for relevant mundane actions.

Cyclic Magick

The updated rules for this Merit remove some of the dramatic interest of this trait. If the effects only last for a couple of hours at each end, it won't come into play all that often. Additionally, many kinds of cycles do not follow an hourly rotation: seasons, moon cycles, etc. One system does not (and should not) apply to all. On this site, cyclic magick will follow a scale of escalation similar to the one listed in the book (+3 and -3 at the extremes) but the specifics will vary depending on the nature and timeline of the cycle you choose. As with other variable traits, the details can be worked out with the Admin.

Danger Sense

On this site, this trait is not likely to provide a bonus commensurate with the cost. As such, it has been reduced to 1 point.

Faithless

Buying off this flaw costs the same number of points as any other flaw (rating x 2.)

Feral Mind

The situational ability to lower the difficulty on some social rolls with this flaw is only possible through ST suggestion, or if the player of another character agrees to it (that is, if they feel it's appropriate.)

Hideaway / Safehouse

In this system, the monthly dice roll for this Merit has been removed. A Hideaway or Safehouse could very well be discovered, but if so it will happen as a result of game events.

Nephilim/Laham

One of the caveats for this merit states that the character must take a minimum of 3 points in physical flaws in order to address the damage that celestial energy can wreak upon a human body. However, it isn't really clear if they mean this literally (only flaws categorized as physical) or more broadly (any flaw that negatively affects the body.) On this site, we interpret this requirement subjectively. Some flaws classified as "Physical" don't really make sense for this merit, while some other physical-based Supernatural flaws might work well.

Nightmares

Given that this flaw is common across the WoD, and that other systems retain its original 1-point value, our system will still be classifying this as a 1-point flaw. There is no 3-point option. The 1-point version still requires a daily WP roll, just as it does in other systems.

Poker Face

This Merit only provides the first round of boons: -2 difficulty to intimidation, subterfuge and resistance to intimidation rolls. (Adding difficulty to the opponent's roll on top of that effectively doubles the bonus and makes the Merit overpowered.)

Property

This Merit is not being used in our game. Characters may own property relative to their level of Resources, without needing to pay for an extra merit.

Shy

Adding +2 difficulty to all social rolls, with the potential of +3 in certain circumstances, is a fairly strict penalty for a one-point flaw. As such, we have amended it to 2 points.

The Bard's Tongue

This flaw does not allow the character to accidentally speak things which later become true, or to speak truths that the character is not personally aware of. While that could be fun in a traditional table-top game, here (where the flaw is typically under player control) it provides too much opportunity for abuse.

True Faith

Despite what the book says, we will not be awarding characters free dots in True Faith during the course of the game. However, players may purchase additional points if there is in-game justification. Because of its unique mechanics, the cost for this is not the same as other Merits. Additional points of True Faith cost the trait's current rating x 7.

All of the optional Faith-based powers are allowed.

Twin Souls

Despite what it says in the description, Twin Souls on this site cannot be animals or Sleepers. They can only be other mages (though that mage might not be Awakened yet.)
